The trip was from December 15, 2005 to January 8, 2006 with time spent in Argentina, Falkland Islands, South Georgia Island, Antarctica and Chile. Our cruise ship was the Clipper Adventurer which accomodates 120 passengers and has a crew of 70. We were very fortunate with the weather and did not experience any storms or rough seas which are common in the region. The calm weather allowed our group to make 29 total landings so we made all of the planned stops plus some.
Antarctica is a vast continent that has a very limited human footprint with the focus today on scientific research. The scenery is magnificent and there is abundant wildlife around the edges of the continent. Due to the cold ocean water massive amounts of krill are produced which feed penguins, fish, seals, birds, whales and other wildlife.
A high point of our trip was visiting South Georgia Island which is within the Antarctic convergence zone but far from the continent. The island has abundent wildlife and very dramatic scenery. We also learned about the expeditions to explore Antarctica during the early years of the 20th century and the exploits of Sir Ernest Shackelton. His story is one of amazing survival, leadership and human endurance. He wrote the following;
"I seemed to vow to myself that someday I would go to the region of ice and snow and go on and on till I came to one of the poles of the earth, the end of the axis upon which this great round ball turns."
Antarctica is a wonderful destination to visit and we strongly recommend it. We hope one day to make a return visit to this unique and wonderful place.

Leaving the South
Inscription on the tombstone of Shackelton. He is quoted to have said about Antarctica "We have seen God in His splendors, heard the text that Nature renders. We had reached the naked soul of man." We agree!12/26/2005 6:54:05 AM
A high point of our trip was visiting South Georgia Island which is within the Antarctic convergence zone but far from the continent. The island has abundent wildlife and very dramatic scenery. We also learned about the expeditions to explore Antarctica during the early years of the 20th century and the exploits of Sir Ernest Shackelton. His story is one of amazing survival, leadership and human endurance. He wrote the following;
